Quick update: Angie Solomon

Grant and Angie Solomon

Today’s post will be short, but we wanted to keep readers apprised of the status of Angie Solomon’s efforts to post bail.

Specifically, we have no news, which is not good news.

Early today, we contacted the Williamson County TN district attorney’s office and left a message, explaining that we understand there are some outstanding details that have to be worked through in order for Angie to post bail, and asking if we could get an update. We also provided a phone number and an email address.

You guessed it: Deafening silence.

We’ve also heard from multiple sources that the DA wants to keep Angie locked up.

Without additional details, we can’t assess the accuracy of that claim. But our understanding is that the money for bail has been raised. It also should be a relatively minor matter to implement the court’s restrictions, including no phones or weapons.

Beyond that, it is a constitutional right to post bond absent a compelling reason, like risk of flight. All persons have that right, as well as the presumption of innocence. And court orders need to be followed in a timely manner.

In other words, this is starting to sound like a case of prosecutorial bias.

We’re also deeply concerned that local officials apparently don’t feel a need to answer questions from the media. To be clear: The First Amendment  expressly recognizes the role a free press plays in our democracy. Relatedly, our experience is that, when silence ensues, local officials are often up to no good. Indeed, when everything is above-board, government officials generally are happy to speak with the media.

So, we have confirmed the Angie remains in detention, but nothing further.

We will continue to contact the DA’s office and other officials, both to learn what is going on, and to reinforce the notion that we and many others are watching.

Let’s hope that Tennessee officials act with integrity in this matter.
