Episcopal priest Michael R. Penland
Episcopal priest and youth ministry director Michael R. Penland was arrested in June 2007 for offering sex to an undercover policeman in a North Carolina bathroom. Penland did not inform his parish, St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Boca Raton, Florida, until they became aware from news reports in September 2007. The married father of a ten year old boy, Penland informed police that he had been having sex in public restrooms for approximately four to five years since his time as a seminarian for the Anglo-Catholic St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Times Square, New York. He was removed from his position as youth ministry director at St. Gregory’s. As of 2022 according to the Episcopal Clerical Directory, Penland is a priest in good standing of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida, resident in the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina. He is a graduate of the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee), ordained in 2004.
