Update: The Rev. Jonathan “Johnny Boy” Adams grooming allegations

Based on some of the comments we’ve received, it appears several readers have rushed to Jonathan “Johnny Boy” Adams’ defense without reading the police report we obtained via FOIA.  Adams is the rector of Trinity Episcopal in Upperville, and allegedly has engaged in grooming behavior towards boys. In light of this failure to read supporting documentation, we are publishing a key conclusion from the Fauquier County sheriff’s department investigation below:

I advised Mr. [redacted] that [redacted] was interviewed and did not disclose any sexual contact or explicit criminal conduct. I explained to him that no evidence was found to substantiate criminal offenses, including sexual abuse or exploitation. However, I told him that the pattern of reported behavior raised serious concerns, and based on my training and experience, this is typical grooming behavior. I told him no criminal charges are being pursued at this time. I advised Mr. [redacted] that the report would remain on file and that the investigation would be reopened should new information or disclosures of sexual abuse arise. I finished talking with them and walked them out.

Bishop [redacted, but this would be Stevenson] was notified that the law enforcement investigation was complete. I explained to Mr. [redacted] that no evidence was found to substantiate criminal offenses, including sexual abuse or exploitation. However, I told him that the pattern of reported behavior raised serious concerns, and based on my training and experience, this is typical grooming behavior. I was later notified by Mr. [redacted, but this would be Stevenson] that Mr. [redacted, but this would be Adams] would be returning to his position at the church, with rules in place.

Rules in place? We thought a key aspect of existing Diocesan rules was two unrelated adults with children at ALL times. So what’s changed?

One final comment: In the paragraph immediately prior to the two cited above, the investigating officer states that “Johnny Boy” Adams told her that he reported issues with a priest while working at Church of the Apostles, and that the priest’s son was “furious with him at the time.”

That begs the issue: In light of the situation at Church of the Apostles, why on earth would “Johnny Boy” Adams be pestering boys — ones who aren’t even part of his church — to attend sleepovers at his house?

The whole situation boggles the mind.
