In 2017 an adult man sued St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, in Portland, Oregon for $3.1 million in damages related to abuse by organist Jay L. Shisler (1940-2001).

The Portland man, in his 60s and identified in the suit as M.W.R., alleged battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The lawsuit accused choir director Jay Shisler of befriending and grooming the boy when he was 11 and 12 years old, and later kissing, sexually touching, and sexually abusing him.
The lawsuit accused the church of not adequately investigating Shisler’s activities with child parishioners, not notifying police or parents about Shisler, and not taking any action against him.
