Attending church this Easter? If so, you may want to avoid these dioceses, clergy, and parishes

One of the sad indictments of the Episcopal Church is that every Easter and Christmas, thousands of so-called “C&E Christians” turn out for services. And while many parishes pull out all the stops (pun intended) to make a good impression, the experience is not adequate to draw worshipers in on a regular basis.

That said, we believe that, even if someone attends church just once a year, it’s important not to subsidize or tacitly condone dioceses, parishes, or priests who behave badly. Thus, we provide a “no-fly list” below that flags some of the worst offenders. (If nothing else, bad karma sticks!)

To be clear: The list is a judgment call. Some really unethical priests and troubled parishes didn’t make the cut. In other cases, people may argue that the person or place in question is trying to turn over a new leaf. And some may disagree with our assessments entirely.

We’re okay with all of these possibilities.

Three further points:

1. We don’t attempt to highlight the reasons for our recommendations. The intrepid are welcome to search this site for details.
