Anglican Watch editor Eric Bonetti returns to work

Anglican Watch editor Eric Bonetti, who took medical leave several weeks ago in order to donate a kidney to his husband, has returned to work.

Bonetti’s husband, Mike, is a previous heart transplant recipient following a heart attack in 2023. During the procedure, Mike went into end-stage renal failure and has been on home hemodialysis ever since.

The kidney donation, a four-hour robotic-assisted procedure, was performed at Georgetown Medical Center.

Bonetti was discharged the following morning, while Mike was in the hospital for five days.

Neither experienced any post-op pain and were up and walking soon after. Mike’s new kidney began producing urine during the procedure and is ramping up swiftly, and has eliminated the need for dialysis.

Meanwhile, Bonetti’s renal function has quickly recovered, and he has had no side effects beyond minor metabolic changes, including some weight loss. His blood work suggests he will have minimal long-term loss of renal function.

“I was expecting the first few days to be rough, but there was zero pain or other issues,” Bonetti said. “Other than a restriction on what I can lift, I resumed normal activities the following morning and have been going full-throttle ever since. Now I just need to get caught up on emails and returning phone calls.”
